Leaving Japan fast: furniture and appliance disposal before move-out
Last-minute move-out disposal guide for foreign residents in Japan.

If the municipal collection date is after your room handover, the problem is no longer “what is sodai gomi?” The problem is finding the fastest legal route for the exact item, city and deadline.

First: separate the item that cannot use ordinary sodai gomi

Furniture / beddingCheck city bulky-waste or self-drop-off routes

Bed frames, desks, chairs, futons and many mattresses are commonly handled as municipal bulky waste, but the booking window and item rules depend on the municipality.

Fridge / washer / TV / air conditionerUse the Home Appliance Recycling route

These four appliance groups are handled separately under Japan’s Home Appliance Recycling Law. Do not wait for an ordinary bulky-waste booking to solve them.

Then compare the four routes in this order

Route Best when Main risk
Municipal pickup The next legal collection date is before your handover Booking slots or fixed collection days may miss the deadline
Municipal self-drop-off Your city allows household drop-off and you can legally transport the items You may need a vehicle, sorting, ID or advance procedures
Sell / give away The item still works and a buyer can collect before handover No-show buyers can turn a cheap plan into a last-day emergency
Authorized paid collection The official schedule cannot meet your move-out deadline Price varies; confirm the legal household-waste route and the written total before booking

Do not use the “leave it at the garbage station” shortcut

Leaving furniture outside without an accepted collection route can create a bigger problem than the original deadline. The Ministry of the Environment also warns households not to hand waste to unlicensed collectors. A fast quote is useful only when the collection and disposal route is legitimate.

What to send for a fast quote

  1. Exact item list: “one single bed frame, one spring mattress, one desk” is better than “some furniture.”
  2. Photos and measurements: include labels for appliances.
  3. Hard deadline: give the room-handover date and time, not only the flight date.
  4. Access: floor, elevator, stairs, parking/loading restrictions.
  5. Written total: ask what is included and what can change on site.

Your city may still have a route you can use

Move-out disposal is local. Sapporo uses ward-based bulky-waste days, Osaka publishes an earliest scheduling rule, Fukuoka says oversized-trash collection is generally scheduled within about a week, and Nagoya uses a monthly large-garbage schedule. Check the city before assuming private pickup is your only option.
